    • Boomers are the most diligent in budgeting, with 55% setting a holiday budget and 68% tracking their expenses. Millennials, while excellent at tracking (72%), prefer flexibility, with only 38% setting a predefined budget. Gen Z has the lowest rate of budgeting at 29%, though 54% are tracking their expenses, signaling an increasing awareness of financial management.
    • Regional differences also emerge, with Ontario and British Columbia residents being the most likely to set a budget (46%), driven by the high cost of living in these provinces. In contrast, Quebec and Atlantic Canada show lower budgeting rates, with 34% and 31% respectively. Prairie residents, however, lead in expense tracking, with 68%, reflecting a more cautious approach in response to local economic conditions.

Gift Spending Intentions
Despite economic pressures, Canadians remain committed to holiday gift-giving:

  • 96% plan to buy gifts, allocating an average budget of $534 per person.
    • Atlantic Canadians are the most generous, budgeting an average of $698 per person, while Quebecers have the smallest average gift budget, at $440. Ontario and British Columbia residents are the most committed to gift-giving, showing strong intent to buy gifts, while those in the Prairies are more likely to scale back on their gift budgets, likely due to financial caution.
    • Millennials are the top spenders, planning to spend nearly $600 on gifts, while Boomers are allocating around $470.
  • Regional differences show Ontario and British Columbia with strong gift-buying sentiment, while Prairies residents are more likely to cut back on their gift budgets.

Travel Spending
Holiday travel remains a priority for many Canadians, despite rising costs:

  • 74% of Canadians plan to travel, budgeting an average of $412 for holiday trips.
    • Gen X allocates the highest travel budget, averaging $500, as they prioritize family visits and vacations, reflecting their stage in life with children and established careers. Millennials also plan to travel but allocate a smaller budget, averaging $350, as they balance travel costs with other financial priorities. British Columbia residents lead in travel intent, with 80% planning to travel, likely due to the region's proximity to travel destinations and higher average incomes. In contrast, only 63% of Quebec residents plan to travel, possibly due to higher costs and colder weather, which may reduce the appeal of holiday trips.

  • 72% plan to donate, contributing an average of $187 per person.
    • Boomers are the leading demographic in charitable giving, averaging $210, driven by a combination of disposable income, financial stability, and a long-standing tradition of generosity. Gen Z, however, plans to donate the least, with an average of $120, possibly reflecting their more cautious financial behavior and limited disposable income.
    • Alberta and British Columbia residents are the most generous, with donations exceeding $200 on average, likely reflecting higher income levels and a tradition of philanthropy in these provinces. In contrast, Quebec shows the lowest intent to donate, with only 60% of residents planning charitable contributions, possibly due to different cultural attitudes or economic pressures.

Rewards & Spending Strategies
Canadians are leveraging credit card rewards to help manage holiday expenses, but satisfaction varies:

  • 77% of Canadians use credit card rewards programs, yet only 38% find them effective for offsetting holiday costs.
    • Atlantic Canada reports the highest satisfaction with credit card rewards, likely due to a higher level of trust in the programs and the specific offerings and promotions available to residents. In contrast, Prairies residents express the least confidence in their credit card rewards, possibly because of fewer tailored options or lower satisfaction with the value these rewards provide for holiday spending.
    • Millennials are the most active users of credit card rewards, with 85% planning to use points or cash-back offers for holiday purchases, reflecting their comfort with financial tools and digital technologies to maximize spending efficiency. Boomers, on the other hand, are less reliant on rewards programs, using them more conservatively and less frequently for holiday expenses. Gen Z also participates in credit card perks, but at lower rates than Millennials, indicating a more cautious financial approach at this stage in their lives.
